By shopping at Thrifty Lizard, every secondhand item you choose as part of your collection saves untold resources for our planet!
In fact, in a 2017 study in the Journal of Cleaner Production, life-cycle assessments were performed on a cotton T-shirt, a pair of jeans and a polyester dress. It was determined that by quadrupling the average life span of these items a 75 percent savings in freshwater used for dyeing and other processes could be achieved.
According to research by Waste and Resources Action Program (WRAP), a sustainability advisory group in England, lengthening the average lifetime of garments by only three months of use per garment would lead to a 5 to 10 percent reduction in each piece's carbon, water and waste footprints. And, Huffington Post notes that the average American throws away around 70lbs of clothing per year.
All this amounts to a massive amount of landfill space. Buying gently used, upcycled items greatly reduces the impact not only in the production of clothing, but keeps tons of items out of landfills and out of emission-heavy incinerators. This provides a better tomorrow for the environment.
